Interview with Dawn Reck: Radio DJ and Creator of Creative Spaces!

Dawn Reck

"I've been called the new "Dawn Peel" after John Peel, which is great"

Who are you and what do you do?

My name is Dawn Reck and I am involved in music and art and love creativity. After a long career in the charity sector, I decided I needed to make changes in my life which would involve all creative culture. I used to write poetry and from there used the words to write lyrics when I was in bands in the '80s as a vocalist. I learnt guitar to help with writing songs and really enjoyed doing that. I enjoy videoing bands live and have a youtube channel with my video's and my favourite artists. I help the Planet X club in Liverpool with their media and have my own groups on Facebook for Alternative Music and Alternative Music Events UK. In the last six months, I started at New Brighton Radio in Merseyside and I do The Alternative Music Radio Show every Friday at 7-9p.m. It covers all genres of alt. music with new releases, requests, music news with interviews coming up with Gary Numan and Wayne Hussey. I've been amazed at how well the show has gone and I've been called the new "Dawn Peel" after John Peel, which is great. You can listen to the radio show here on Mixcloud Dawn Reck.

Who or what inspires you?

I am inspired by anyone who is creative in any form. I love hearing new releases from musicians, seeing new artwork by all creatives. I enjoy new experiences whether that is in drama, dance, theatre, and the written word! Inspiration is all around us in many forms, it's about taking the time to see it and experience it.

What challenges do you face?

I like to overcome any challenges as best I can. My challenge at the moment is the opening of Mersey Arts Zone in New Brighton, Merseyside. I was on track to open at the beginning of April after months of hard work and the world came to a grinding halt. It's been a difficult time but I didn't want to let go of my dream of a creative space, so I will be making sure I'm ready to open when the time comes.

What has been the highlight of your career so far?

I would say the best is yet to come with Mersey Arts Zone. All my experiences in culture will come together for M.A.Z. and I'm really excited for the opening and how it will enrich the community.

What are your hopes and dreams for the future?

I hope I can continue being involved in culture and that Mersey Arts Zone becomes a success and is enjoyed by all.
