Interview with Becky Baldwin from Hands off Gretel and Fury. 5 Quick Questions!

I first met Becky back in 2018 when I interviewed Hands Off Gretel at Jimmy's in Manchester for Grrrls With Guitars Zine. I spoke to her today about spending money, having gigs cancelled due to Covid-19 and her experience at NAMM in Los Angeles!

Becky Baldwin

1. Who are you and what do you do?
Hello, I'm Becky Baldwin. I'm the bass player for alt rock band Hands off Gretel and metal band Fury. I also teach bass at my rock school Bristol Rock Centre!

2. Who or what inspires you?
Loads of people! My bandmates, especially Lauren from HoG who works so hard and does so much for her fans. The people in my life who have helped me along the way, and also artists like Devin Townsend who seems to have so many strings to his bow and is always involving his sound and technology!

3. What challenges do you face?
I'm always worrying about money and everything I need gets held back by that doubt "can I afford to do that? Maybe I can now, but what if next month doesn't go to plan?" I think not being able to fend for myself is my biggest fear. I also tend to over-commit myself to things and get myself in a muddle with stress and anxiety when I realise what I've got to do.

 4. What has been the highlight of your career so far?
I think it was the whole experience of going to NAMM in LA earlier this year. It was again stressful, and really I didn't actually "do" anything, but pulling off the trip felt like an achievement to me, and it made me see how far I've come in my independence. People on the other side of the world recognising me also felt like it validated the whole trip and process!

5.  What are your hopes and dreams for the future?
I do want to be a hugely successful and famous rockstar, but right now all I can think about is just being able to get back on stage with my band and keep playing our little shows. I just want so much for us all to safely get through this virus asap and get back to seeing our friends without awful government control and a witch hunt among the communities. I can't imagine my life having any direction if we can't rehearse and tour together soon. Crossing all my fingers for autumn gigs to go ahead!
